Bohusfestivalen 2023

The Bohus Festival third year 2023

See you in Strömstad September 7 - 10

It's all in the hands! Bohusfestivalen celebrates the work of the hands, the crafts. For an extended weekend, Strömstad will flourish with workshops, wool and angora, chisels and granite.

The party is based on two crafts with unique local roots - Bohus Stickning and the carved granite - both of which were emergency relief work in the poor stonemasonry communities around Strömstad in the 1930s. It turns out that the jackets, like the stones, were not only beautiful, they were also indestructible. Bohusfestivalen wants to pass on the old techniques that guarantee beauty and quality.

A warm welcome!

Initiative & Purpose

Bohuslän handicrafts

With the Bohus Festival, we want to highlight and show the interest in Bohuslän handicrafts, show the power that exists in handicrafts and show the ability of handicrafts to unite and socially engage.

We want to highlight the positive health effects of crafting.

Similarly, we would like to emphasize that the return of for handcrafted items in natural materials with respect to for the environment and sustainability is timely.

Highlighting and displaying our Bohuslän history

In Bohuslän, it was primarily granite that was used. The stonemasonry industry peaked in 1929 with up to 7,000 workers, before almost completely collapsing during the depression of the 1930s. That's how Bohus Stickning started - as emergency relief work for stonemasonry families, allowing women to contribute their own income. No one could have imagined that it would be such a worldwide success.

When cruise ships from the USA arrived in for Gothenburg in the 1940s and 1960s, the shop Bohus Stickning at Arkaden in Gothenburg was emptied of garments, basically sold out in just a few hours. The migration for abroad from Sweden until for the 1920s may explain why Bohus Stickning there is such a strong interest abroad, many are proud of their Swedish roots far back in time and are fascinated by the history of Bohus Knitting and Bohuslän.
