FAQ

AngoraGarnet is a small family business with few employees and a huge workload in terms of responsibility and work processes.

We want to be able to stand up for our work, so we have to be careful about quality at every stage. It is a great responsibility to be the carrier of such an important cultural heritage as Bohus Stickning and it requires accuracy and care. In addition, our angora rabbits are also a great responsibility and they must always come first. Pernille shears all the farm's angora rabbits herself. Only in recent years have we been able to share the workload of the farm with other employees.

AngoraGarnet's business cannot be compared to larger online retailers who, with everything in stock, can ship orders within a few days. If we don't have your knitting kit in stock, the yarn has to be dyed in for your knitting kit before we can send it for to you. Unfortunately, there is currently no space on any level to keep everything in the e-shop in stock for at all times.

This means that during periods of heavy workload, email responses and shipments of parcels may take a little more than 3 weeks.

Pernille is producing knitting kit for Bohus Stickning for her own pleasure, but this can only continue if there is an understanding of the extent of the work and the need for Pernille to have space for her own creativity, education and family.

There is no one else in her place who can dye yarns for knitting kit and shear the farm's rabbits. Our yarns are of high quality because we care about our craft, the cultural heritage we are responsible for and every step of our production.

We kindly ask for your understanding if response emails and shipments take longer than usual.

for Bohus Stickning knitting kit knitting instructions are sold only with yarn for knitting up models according to the original. We are careful to ensure that our yarns are as similar as possible to the original yarns, out of respect for the cultural heritage Bohus Stickning.

for Silfverberg Design if you can exchange yarns, please contact us and we will help you exchange yarns according to your wishes. Occasionally you will find selected knitting instructions in Silfverberg Design to buy without yarn in the e-shop.

Bohus Stickning is not a knitting technique, but for the Bohus Stickning brand, many different patterns and models were designed by several designers for for sale. The knitting technique is Bohus Stickning pattern knitting with two, up to four pattern colors working on the same pattern row and only straight and purl stitches. It is not technically complicated to knit Bohus Stickning, but the most important thing to succeed is patience. It may take a little time. You will have the pleasure for a long time, and a valuable, unique knitted garment for life.

As a first Bohus Stickning project, it can be nice not to have to do pattern knitting with more than two pattern colors working at the same time.

Some models in angora and merino are Regnmoln, Blue Mist, Gröna Dimman, Grå Dimman, Palmen Röd, Sagopalmen, Cocospalmen, The Checkered, Gallret Rött, Gallret Rött and light base, Gallret Blått, Gallret Grönt and Våren.

There are also many models in wool yarn, for such as Yxorna, Vävnaden, Kransen, Randiga Loppan, Randiga Kinesen, Stora Nejlikan and Lilla Nejlikan.

If you search for "2 mf simultaneously" in the e-shop, you will find in the search results models with a maximum of two pattern colors working simultaneously. It is also possible to search for models with up to three, or if you are looking for something difficult, up to four pattern colors at work.

Originally, Bohus Knitting's garments were knitted up in many different models, so the fit could be very different between two garments in the same pattern.

We have chosen to recreate patterns in one Design of many that most people feel comfortable with and that can be easily adjusted;

In many of our knitting instructions, we have included suggestions for on how to knit in a different Design; short sleeves, narrow sleeves, with a narrower waistband and a tucked-in fit compared to the straighter fit we have chosen to use.

Especially for those sweaters that are knitted from the top down, it is easy to adjust the length and fit to your liking.

For sweaters in angora, we have also described how to knit a slightly more open folded neck edge and how to knit in double folded rib. Then the sweater sits a little higher around the neck. There were sweaters in angora knitted in both ways. The waistband of the sweaters could originally be 4 cm, 8 cm or 10 cm in length. But also without elastic and then instead with folded edges, both for the neck, sleeve and edge at the bottom.

The knitting instructions contain indications of the length and chest measurements of the finished garment in different sizes. These are correct provided you knit with the specified gauge.

Bohus Stickning pullovers and cardigans with a round yokes that were knitted from the top down were called 'Old circular knitting'. The pullovers often had slightly larger yokes.

Using the Old Circular Knitting method, pullovers is worked with a round yoke on circular needles, but cardigan is worked back and forth while the button edges of the cardigan are worked a little tighter with a small ball of ground color on each side.

When the yoke is finished, the front, back and sleeves are worked back and forth separately, but you can, for example, work the sleeves in the round.

The new circular knitting could basically be knitted in two ways: with a sewn-in sleeve or raglan. Allvaret for example, we have seen it knitted in both ways originally.

Characteristic of the New Circular Knitting were models with slightly smaller yokes and fewer pattern rows. They were often worked from the bottom up. Single-color sections are worked back and forth according to the instructions and the patterned yoke is worked in pullover circular knitting. for cardigan is worked back and forth, just like in Old Circular Knitting.

With a few exceptions, knitting kit for pullover and cardigan for all Bohus Stickning recreated designs are in angora/merino, and you can choose to knit the neckline as a single or double rib. Description follows for both.

A pullover with a folded neck edge is from the top pattern row down just like a pullover with an elastic neck edge. The difference is that a pullover with ribbed neckline goes a little further up the neck because the rib is knitted above the pattern piece and folded twice. The variant with a folded neckline is slightly larger in the neck opening with a stockinette edge that is folded inwards in a folded row.

Lambswool Bohus Stickning designs for pullovers and cardigans always included double folded elastic in the neckline.

Bohus Stickning in the original was often not symmetrical. It was the overall artistic impression of the pattern that was important.

In many of Bohus Knitting's designs, the pattern shifts after rows of increases and on cardigans there was often no symmetry around the button edge in the center front. The knitting instructions state the number of increased stitches you should work per increase row; the stitches should be increased more or less evenly distributed on the row, taking care for not to increase in the previous row's purl stitches. It is important that the purl stitches remain intact as they give a pearly impression.

So it doesn't matter if the pattern shifts, that's the point. This is also how the sweaters were originally knitted.

When I, Pernille, knit a cardigan, I see for to increase 1-3 stitches below or above the specified number to achieve symmetry in the center front. How many stitches I choose to deviate with depends on which size I knit and which pattern I knit, it is important for how the pattern takes shape. It's not clear from the description, but it doesn't have much impact on the overall impression of the pattern - and is just as consistent with original garments, in any case.

Pictures of finished models can be misleading because each shirt in Bohus Stickning will be unique. We refer for the pictures on the website as an indicative impression of the finished garment.

for Bohus Stickning angora/merino cardigans use small mother-of-pearl buttons in a matching color for the base color. The buttons on the original garments were about 12 mm in diameter and had two holes with a small notch between them.

for Bohus Stickning 100% lambswool base color cardigans use horn buttons, originally 13 mm in diameter with four holes.

Washing and care instructions for knitted garments in angora and lambswool yarn can be found under "Washing and care instructions".

When I recreate Bohus Stickning , I always start from original garments and/or pattern drawings with original yarn. Since garments within the same design at Bohus Knitting's time could vary, it may be that with more models we recreate also need to recreate several shades of the same color number because the shade is important in its context.

for For example, color no. 162 in Blue Shimmer goes towards brown, but is slightly greener in all other recreated models. Likewise with color no. 259 in Egg Blue, I have chosen to dye a new color with no. 259, "259 Egg Blue". Color 259 in the original garment in Egg Blue as recreated matches the yarn in color 259 on the pattern drawing Kerstin Olsson, who designed Egg Blue for Bohus Stickning, has been so helpful to lend me for the purpose. Color 259 from the previously recreated design did not fit in with other pattern colors in the Blue Egg.

I sometimes find that it is not possible to buy the same color powder that I had before, probably because they are constantly evolving for the sake of the environment. This means that all color recipes with the discontinued color powder must be adjusted when I have to dye for new orders on knitting kit. It can be difficult to achieve exactly the same shade. I want to believe that those who dyed for Bohus Stickning when it was active from 1039 for 1969 have had similar difficulties and this may be an explanation for that some colors have varied.

All knitting kit for pullover /cardigan contain enough yarn for for largest size XL with descriptions from size XXS or XS. If you knit a smaller size, there will be leftover yarn in the base color. We do not offer exchange of leftover yarn, but suggest you knit a solid color scarf for your sweater. They were also knitted originally.

Knitting instructions for "Classic Bohus Scarf" reads: Cast on 61 stitches and work moss stitch - knit, purl - in the desired length as long as the yarn lasts.

All our yarn is spun at Henrichsens Uldspinderi in Denmark, in the Nordic region today the only spinning mill that can spin 50% angora yarn in 50% angora in the quality and quantity we need. Henrichsens Uldspinderi gets its merino wool from New Zealand, from farms in New Zealand that produce wool without the use of mulesing and similar methods. Some of our lambswool yarns are mottled because they also contain a small amount of wool from Gotland fur sheep, from England.

Henrichsens Uldspinderi has been the spinning mill supplying the yarn for Bohus Stickning knitting kits ever since the re-creation work began in 1999.

At one time, the owner of a knitting kit with natural grey wool yarn, purchased in the early 2000s ran out of yarn to complete their project. We were able to provide them with the yarn they required in the same high quality. Remarkably it was even the same shade as the yarn they bought 20 years ago! This is exceptional.

Of course, one might think that there should be Swedish wool in Bohus Stickning, but as far as we know there are no sheep farmers who can deliver the necessary amount of wool of uniform quality and color year after year, and therefore no alternative for Henrichsens Uldspinderi.

We believe that we have a responsibility to do our part to ensure that the spinning mill in the Nordic countries that can spin our angora wool continues to have a good basis for continuing its operations. We are happy to support them by buying wool yarn from them in the future.

I believe that had there not been such strict regulations on the import of wool for in Sweden during Emma Jacobsson's and Bohus Stickning's time, Emma too would have searched globally for wool of the highest quality. The quality of the yarns used in Bohus Stickning knitting was part of the secret of Bohus Knitting's success, and Emma Jacobsson herself took part in sorting the wool to ensure quality.

Turn on/off contentWe have limited staff resources and are not authorized to show our angora rabbits to the public, except up for 6 times a year. These 6 times we have for bookings of larger groups with an interest in needlework such as handicraft associations and knitting networks. We usually follow up with a visit to our shop Skattkistan in Strömstad after the tour of the farm. Pernille usually cuts a rabbit and those who want to can greet and pet the rabbit, and feel its soft angora wool. The rabbits are always calm, kind and patient even though it is of course a bit unusual for them to have so much attention during the wool cutting. You are welcome to contact us if you as a group are interested in visiting us for a tour of the farm and our angora rabbits, but it is first come, first served for .

If you did not find the answer to your questions, feel free to write or call for us. We would also like to highlight the many dedicated groups for Bohus Stickning on Ravelry and Facebook, who are always happy to help for answer questions and provide knitting-related advice. They are invaluable resources.
