Bohus Knitting Vildäpplet

1900 kr - 4670 kr

Vildäpplet, known in English as "The Wild Apple" was designed for Bohus Stickning by Kerstin Olsson in 1958.

Vildäpplet was one of Kerstins Olsson's first patterns as a designer for Bohus Stickning and she was inspired by a rowan tree she saw outside a window at for Bohus Knitting's premises in Guldheden, Gothenburg.

Later in her time as designer, Kerstin Olsson was known for taking account the complexity of her designs and creating beautiful designs with plain rows for increases and fewer rows with 3 or 4 colours. However, as this was one of her first designs, she did not reflect so much on the its technical difficulty for the Bohus Stickning knitters. Thus, this design has 13 colours and is knitted with three rows with 4 colours and 10 with three. You must admit that the rewards of meeting this technical challenge is a breathtaking work of art, it is not for nothing that this design is nicknamed "The Masterpiece".

The knitting kit for Vildäpplet was developed in consultation with Kerstin Olsson based on charts and original garments held in museum collections. The kit was first released in 2007. The design is available as a knitting kit for pullover /cardigan with a round yoke, as a jacket with patterned collar, as a hat, a tam, as a triangular scarf or as a patterned scarf.

The garment is knitted on olive green base in an angora yarn spun from 50% hand-cut angora wool from our own angora rabbits and 50% New Zealand merino wool. The pattern yarns are hand-dyed by Pernille Silfverberg to mimic the original yarns for Vildäpplet . The yarns are spun in Denmark at Henrichsens Uldspinderi.

Product description

The kit contains enough yarn to knit a pullover or cardigan in the largest size XL, which corresponds to the garment's measurement of 117 cm around the chest, and instructions to knit a reproduction of the original Bohus Stickning design in sizes from 92 cm for 117 cm. The garment can be knitted with an elastic neck or a folded neck edge, both of which are described in the instructions. The kit also includes a printed pattern chart card with yarn samples for and 13 pattern yarns to use as reference.

The garment is worked from the top down in AngoraGarnets angora/merino yarn. The patterned yoke for design is worked with up to for four and in many cases three pattern yarns at the same time on one row with a knitting tension of 33 stitches/10 cm. Only knit and purl stitches are used. The cardigan is worked back and forth while the front edge for buttons are worked side by side. The jumper is worked in the round on circular needles, then the front and back pieces are worked in stockinette stitch back and forth and seamed to mimic its original construction. Knitting needles are not included in the knitting kit, but typically 2.0 mm-2.5 mm needles are needed to achieve the correct knitting tension.

Pattern yarns for the Wild Apple design are hand-dyed by Pernille to ensure they mimic its original design.

The buttons on the original garment were mother-of-pearl buttons 12 mm in diameter with two holes and a small notch between them. Buttons are not included in the knitting kit.
