Bohus Knitting Ägget

"The Egg", known in English as "The Egg", was originally designed in 1963 for Bohus Stickning by Kerstin Olsson along with a series of similar designs created between 1963 and 1967.

When she created the Egg, she was inspired by a papier-mâché egg that Emma Jacobsson received as a gift from students from the Konstfack School in Stockholm as a thank you for visiting Bohus Stickning at Guldheden in Gothenburg. The pattern for the egg was originally executed in yellow-brown tones with hints of pink. Many of Kerstin Olsson's early designs were created in only one color scheme. However, the pattern for the Egg was created in a dizzying array of colors, these include Egg Grey and Egg Blue, but also Myrtle Green and New Azalea.

The knitting kit for The egg was developed in 2005 from original charts and garments held in museum collections , in consultation with Kerstin Olsson. The egg is only available as knitting kit for pullover /cardigan with a round yoke.

This design is knitted on natural white base in our angora/merino yarn spun from 50% hand-cut angora wool from our own angora rabbits and 50% New Zealand merino lambswool. The white angora wool in the yarn comes from our naturally white angora rabbits and is not bleached. The yarns are spun in Denmark at Henrichsens uldspinderi and hand-dyed to mimic the original yarns for design by Pernille Silfverberg.

Product description

The knitting kit contains enough yarn to knit a pullover or cardigan in the largest size XL, which corresponds to the garment's measurement of 117cm around the chest, and knitting instructions to knit a recreated rendition of the original Bohus Stickning design in sizes from 92cm for 117cm. The kit also includes a printed pattern chart with yarn samples for and 10 included yarns to use as reference.

The garment is worked from the top down in AngoraGarnets angora/merino yarn. The patterned yoke for design is worked with up to for three pattern yarns in one round with a knitting tension of 33 stitches/10cm. The yoke is predominantly worked with only two pattern yarns in one row. Only knit and purl stitches are used. The cardigan is worked in stockinette stitch back and forth while the front edge for buttons are worked side by side. The jumper is worked in the round on circular needles down for the sleeves, then the front and back pieces are worked in stockinette stitch back and forth and seamed to mimic its original construction. Knitting needles are not included in the kit, but typically 2.0mm-2.5mm needles are needed to achieve the correct knitting tension.

Pattern colours for this design are hand dyed by Pernille to ensure they correctly match the original design. Please anticipate that it may take 3 weeks before you receive notice that your kit has been put together and sent to you. During busy periods or holidays (or if more than a couple of pattern colours are out of stock and need to be dyed for you) this may be extended.

The buttons on the original garment were mother-of-pearl buttons 12 mm in diameter with two holes and a small notch between them. Buttons are not included in the knitting kit.
