'Ballongerna Blå' and 'Ballongerna Röd' were designed for Bohus Stickning by Kerstin Olsson in 1963.
The knitting kit for Ballongerna Blå and Ballongerna Röd were developed in 2016 from original charts and garments held in museum collections , in consultation with Kerstin Olsson. The design is available as knitting kit for pullover /cardigan with a round yoke.
Both designs are knitted on a light grey beige (no 96) angora/merino base yarn spun from 50% hand-clipped angora wool from our own angora rabbits and 50% New Zealand merino wool. The yarn is spun in Denmark at Heinrichsens Uldspinderi and is dyed to match the original yarns. The main colours are dyed at the spinning mill to ensure an even saturation across the whole garment. The pattern colours are hand dyed by Pernille Silfverberg.
The kit contains enough yarn to knit a pullover or cardigan in the largest size XL, which corresponds to the garment's measurement of 117cm around the chest, and instructions to knit a recreation Design of the original Bohus Stickning pattern in sizes from 92cm for 117cm. The model can be knitted with an elastic neck or a folded neck edge, both of which are described in the instructions. The kit also includes a printed pattern chart with yarn samples for and 5 pattern yarns to use as reference.
The garment is worked from the top down, in AngoraGarnets Bohus Angora Merino Yarn. The patterned yoke of the design is knitted with up to three colours on a single row at a gauge of 33 stitches/10cm. The majority of rows in the yoke have only 2 colours, but this is a challenging knit, with 21 rows knitted with 3 colours. Only knit and purl stitches are used. The cardigan is knit flat with the front bands knitted at the same time. The pullover is knit in the round to the under ams and then knitted in flat and seamed to match the original construction. Knitting needles are not included in the kit, however typically a needle size of 2mm-2.5mm will be required to achieve the correct gauge.
Please note: Pattern colours for this design are hand dyed by Pernille to ensure they correctly match the original design. Please anticipate that it may take 3 weeks before you receive notice that your kit has been put together and sent to you. During busy periods or holidays (or if more than a couple of pattern colours are out of stock and need to be dyed for you) this may be extended.
The buttons on the original garment were mother-of-pearl buttons 12 mm in diameter with two holes and a small notch between them. Buttons are not included in the knitting kit.
Light gray-beige base color no. 96. Pattern yarns for Ballongerna Blå have color nos. 188, 164, 276, a dark gray-blue with color no. 54 tending towards purple and turquoise color no. 259.
