Bohus Knitting Nya Azalean

1840 kr - 4495 kr

Nya Azalean, known as "The New Azalea" in English, was designed for Bohus Stickning by Kerstin Olsson in 1963. The New Azalea was a colour variation of the Egg, which was the first of a series of similar designs created between 1963 and 1967.

When Kerstin Olsson created the original Ägget, she was inspired by a papier-mâché egg that Emma Jacobsson received as a gift from students at the Konstfack School in Stockholm as a thank you for visiting Bohus Stickning at Guldheden in Gothenburg. The pattern for Ägget was originally executed in yellow-brown tones with hints of pink. Many of Kerstin Olsson's early designs were created in only one colour scheme. However, this design was created in a range of colour combinations, with a dizzying array of results. These include Ägget Blått, Ägget Grått and Myrten Grön, as well as this vivacious Nya Azalea.

The original knitting kit for Nya Azalean was developed in 2005 in consultation with Kerstin Olsson. It was originally recreated on a dark aubergine base from original charts and garments held in museum collections. It was revised in 2016 and in 2017 a recreation of the design on a black base was released. Nya Azalean is available as knitting kit for a pullover /cardigan, as a pullover with cowl neck, as well as a hat and a tam.

The garment is knitted on black or purple base in an angora yarn spun from 50% hand-cut angora wool from our own angora rabbits and 50% New Zealand merino wool. The pattern yarns are hand-dyed by Pernille Silfverberg to mimic the original yarns. The yarns are spun in Denmark at Henrichsens Uldspinderi.

Product description

The knitting kit contains enough yarn to knit a pullover or cardigan in the largest size XL, which corresponds to the garment's measurement of 117 cm around the chest, and instructions to knit a replica of the original Bohus Stickning design in sizes from 92 cm for 117 cm. The kit also includes a printed pattern chart with yarn samples for and 5 pattern yarns in black base and 4 pattern yarns in purple base to use as a reference.

The garment is worked from the top down in AngoraGarnets angora/merino yarn. The patterned yoke for design is worked with up to for three pattern yarns in one round with a knitting tension of 33 stitches/10 cm. The yoke is mainly worked with only two pattern yarns in one row. Only knit and purl stitches are used. The cardigan is worked back and forth while the front edge for buttons are worked side by side. The jumper is worked in the round on circular needles, then the front and back pieces are worked in stockinette stitch back and forth and seamed to mimic its original construction. Knitting needles are not included in the knitting kit, but typically 2.0 mm-2.5 mm needles are needed to achieve the correct knitting tension.

Pattern yarns for Nya Azalean are hand-dyed by Pernille to ensure they reproduce their original design.

The buttons on the original garment were mother-of-pearl buttons 12 mm in diameter with two holes and a small notch between them. Buttons are not included in the knitting kit.
