Bohus Knitting Ägget Grått

1840 kr - 4495 kr

"Ägget Grått", known in English as "The Grey Egg", was originally designed for Bohus Stickning by Kerstin Olsson along with a series of similar designs created between 1963 and 1967.

When she created the Egg, she was inspired by a papier-mâché egg that Emma Jacobsson received as a gift from students from the Konstfack School in Stockholm as a thank you for visiting Bohus Stickning at Guldheden in Gothenburg. The pattern for the egg was originally executed in yellow-brown tones with hints of pink. Many of Kerstin Olsson's early designs were created in only one color scheme. However, the pattern for the Egg was created in a dizzying array of colors, these include Egg Grey and Egg Blue, but also Myrtle Green and New Azalea.

The knitting kit for Ägget Grått was developed in 2007 and revised in 2016 from original charts and garments held in museum collections, in consultation with Kerstin Olsson. Ägget Grått is available as a knitting kit for pullover/cardigan with a round yoke and for hat.

This design is knitted on a light gray-beige base in our angora/merino yarn spun from 50% hand-cut angora wool from our own angora rabbits and 50% New Zealand merino lambswool. The yarns are spun in Denmark at Henrichsens uldspinderi and dyed to mimic the original yarns for the design. Although original garments were often mottled and could differ slightly, yarns for base are dyed at the spinning mill to ensure a reasonably even shade throughout the garment. The pattern yarns are hand-dyed by Pernille Silfverberg.

Product description

Each knitting kit contains pattern instructions to create an authentic reproduction of the original Bohus Knitting garment in your chosen design. The knitting kit also includes a printed pattern chart with yarn samples for the 8 yarns included in the knitting kit to use as a reference.

The design itself is worked in our angora/merino yarn with a knitting tension of 33 stitches per 10 cm. The pattern is worked with up to 3 pattern yarns per row. Mostly the pattern is worked with only 2 pattern yarns at the same time, but there are about XX rows with 3 in work at the same time. Knitting needles are not included in the kit, but typically 2.0-2.5 mm needles are needed to achieve the correct knitting tension.

Available kits
  • pullover or cardigan with a round yoke
  • hat

The knitting kit for pullover and cardigan

The garment is knitted from the top down in AngoraGarnets angora/merino yarn. The kit contains enough yarn to knit a pullover or cardigan in the largest size XL, which corresponds to the garment's measurement of 117 cm around the chest. The kit includes instructions for knitting an authentic reproduction of the original Bohus Knitting design in sizes from 92 cm for 117 cm.

Both the pullover and cardigan are worked from the top down. The cardigan is worked in stockinette stitch back and forth while the front edge for the buttons is worked evenly. The jumper is worked in the round on circular needles down for the sleeves, which like the cardigan are worked in raglan. Then the front and back pieces of the garment are worked in stockinette stitch back and forth and seamed to mimic its original construction. The knitting instructions include the choice of knitting either an elastic neck (single or double fold) or a folded neck edge, as original garments are knitted in both ways.

The buttons on the original garment were mother-of-pearl buttons 12 mm in diameter with two holes and a small notch between them. Buttons are not included in the knitting kit.

Pattern yarns for this design are hand-dyed by Pernille to ensure they fully reproduce the original design.
